Russ Nicholson Love

Let's have some appreciation of what the Old School looked like in Britain - here's some Russ Nicholson stuff. His illos for The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and Citadel of Chaos stopped me in my tracks when I first encountered them and showed me what a world of heroic (or anti-heroic) fantasy looked like.

I only wish I could find a scan of the infamous Zombie illo from Warlock - still amazing to think that a picture that gruesome could end up in a children's book.

Nicholson is the reason why we can forgive the Fiend Folio.

  4. Great artist. Nicholson, Blanche and Ian Miller captured the weird aspect of fantasy better than anyone, and certainly made British gaming distinctive in its early days. It's a shame that we don't see more of this kind of art nowadays.

  5. Awesome.

One of the few bad things about the new printing of Dragon Warriors is that James Wallis couldn't get the rights to reproduce all that awesome Russ and Leo Hartas artwork.

  6. *sigh* Now that art is the very essence of 'back in the day' Games Workshop.

  7. Same artist that did the Githyanki and Caryatid column illustrations?

The change of artwork put me off DW which is probably why I haven't bought it yet. On a similar matter I was heart-broken when Gary Chalk stopped illustrating the Lone Wolf books and can't look at any of the Brian Williams-era books in the same light that I do the earlier ones. Ironically Williams was Joe Dever's original choice for LW but by the time he picked up the pen, Chalk's vision of Magnamund was firmly set in my minds eye. Perhaps a subject for a later post here.

He did the Githyanki, I can't recall off-hand if the Caryatid is his as well, I don't recall it being in his style. I'll check when I get home. He did do the Crypt Thing, my favourite of the FF illos.
